By Alex Mikoulianitch on January 03, 2026
You might just say that "commuting" is New York City’s not-so-favorite pastime. An integral yet sometimes challenging part of the Big Apple’s unparalleled lifestyle, commuting is an essential part of living in one of the greatest cities in the world.
Almost every nook and cranny of the city and its boroughs are accessible through NYC’s far-reaching public transportation system. However, where you place roots will determine how easily you can reach those nooks and crannies.
Undoubtedly, the city’s 24-hour subway system - run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) - will be your bread and butter. But, not all neighborhoods, not even some of the most popular, are created equal when accessing some of the most flexible and convenient subway lines.
Below, the Prevu Real Estate team will give you the insight of a local about everything you should know regarding the best NYC commuting neighborhoods.

Astoria
A legend amongst NYC’s well-known neighborhoods, Astoria can easily be considered one of the best neighborhoods in Queens.
Sumptuous Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine, a strong sense of community and small-town vibes, and varied housing options have long since put Astoria on the map of the best places to live in NYC. Couple that with easy access to some of the most convenient subway lines, and you’ve got a neighborhood that arguably has it all.
Astoria boasts one of the most effortless commutes to Midtown Manhattan - 15 minutes travel time depending on where you live - but its numerous subway stops and lines also help connect it to the rest of the city and neighboring boroughs.
The N, W, and R lines are some of the most versatile of NYC’s subway system, and Astoria has access to all of them. Multiple stops, including Astoria Boulevard, 36 Ave, and Broadway help provide access to these lines regardless of where you settle in Astoria.
If you need more options, the 21st Street-Queensbridge stop provides access to the orange F line, while the 46th Street stop offers the blue E line in addition to the F and R trains. There’s even a ferry option for those who settle in the north-western reaches of Astoria, which connects riders to Roosevelt Island and 34th Street in Manhattan.

Midtown/Hell’s Kitchen
If you have access to Midtown, you can access all of NYC and beyond.
The famed postcard images of NYC’s often chaotic heart, Midtown and Hell’s Kitchen mark the convergence of nearly all the essential subway lines that serve the Big Apple. You can virtually reach any part of the city from Midtown, parts of New Jersey, and essentially every borough.
The Times Square subway station, as iconic as the neon lights surrounding it, is home to nine subway lines, including the S shuttle train, which connects riders to the iconic Grand Central Terminal and its green lines. You can almost reach every local and express stop from this station, as the combination of trains covers virtually every part of the city and its boroughs.
Anyone needing access to Brooklyn or Queens can use the N, R, W, and Q express trains. Those who plan to travel often to Harlem or West Village can use the local E and C trains and the express A train.
The red 1, 2, and 3 subway lines, meanwhile, will provide the most seamless access for connection to the Bronx and East New York.

Lincoln Square
With all the amenities that Lincoln Square offers, its impeccable commuting options become almost an afterthought, and rightfully so.
Home to the famed Metropolitan Opera, the Julliard School, and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the iconic neighborhood easily stands out as one of the most popular places to live on the Upper West Side. The world-famous entertainment venues are also complemented by a wealth of diverse cuisines and restaurants, from tried and true NYC steakhouses to some of the most delectable Indian eateries found in the city.
The nearby Columbus Circle, a famed shopping and dining destination in its own right, is almost on par with Times Square regarding access to New York City’s most-utilized subway lines.
The 59th Street-Columbus Circle station, located on the southwesternmost corner of Central Park, is serviced by six trains. The express A train makes its first stop here after a lengthy trip between 125th Street and 59th Street. The train allows for a breezy commute to Inwood or the upper reaches of Manhattan’s West Side. The D, B, and 1 trains - the 2 also stops here during late nights - help commuters connect to other parts of the city and the boroughs.

West Village
The ever-evolving West Village always had a flair for the avant-garde. Its very streets, a collage of juxtaposed angles and hard-to-recall street names, help set the tone for just how unique this iconic neighborhood is.
Much like Lincoln Square, West Village’s jam-packed itinerary of attractions - legendary jazz clubs, vintage clothing shops, record stores, and a neverending carousel of dive bars - tends to overshadow the unparalleled convenience of the area’s commuting scene.
West Village is a stone’s throw away from Washington Square Park, which is smack in the middle of all the subway lines you need to enjoy a quick commute time to NYC’s essentials.
The W 4th Street-Washington Park station is your go-to for easy commutes up and down the West Side. The A train will whisk you away to Times Square or Colombus Circle within 15 minutes - as long as there’s no construction at one of the stations on the way there - while the B, D, and F trains can take you to Brooklyn or the East Side.
On the eastern side of Washington Square Park is the priceless convergence of the 8th Street - NYU stop and the Astor Place station. Only a block apart, the stations provide access to the yellow and green lines, creating an ideal commuting option for those needing to reach any part of the Upper East or various parts of Midtown and the boroughs.
You even gain access to two Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) stations at Christopher Street and 14th Street, allowing you to explore New Jersey’s Hoboken and Jersey City.

Brooklyn Heights
The breakneck pace of Manhattan’s pulse isn’t for everyone - but that doesn’t have to mean you’ll lose access to excellent commuting options.
Brooklyn Heights is the not-so-well-kept secret of Brooklyn. Situated right across the water from the mesmerizing skyline of the Financial District and boasting views of the Hudson River, the historic neighborhood is notorious for its demanding price points and is home to some of the most coveted real estate in New York.
Its boutique-like square footage allows for breezy traversal of the entire neighborhood, so you can easily reach any of its five subway stations.
The northernmost High Street gives you access to the all-important A express train and the workhorse C train, giving you access to Midtown within 35 minutes.
Court Street is home to all the essential yellow trains: the N, R, and W. Though there is no Q express train here, the N can take its place for commuting purposes, as it can sometimes run express and take you to stations where you can transfer to the Q.
Lastly, the Borough Hall and Clark Street stations will connect you to the red 2 and 3 trains, which make local stops throughout the Financial District and provide connections to reach the South Street Ferry and Battery Park.

Park Slope
As the saying goes, "You can’t have your cake and eat it, too." But if Park Slope is a place you call home, you can at least savor a slice.
The tranquility and neighborhood airs of one of the best neighborhoods in Brooklyn have made Park Slope a mecca for those seeking community, local flair, and an escape from the relentless rush of the city.
Decorated with historic brownstones and lavish townhouses, Park Slope is one of the best areas to live near Prospect Park, making it one of the most desirable residential destinations available in the city. In most cases, peace and quiet and vibrant local spirit don’t often go hand in hand with access to the vital subway lines and easy commutes. But Park Slope doesn’t disappoint in this regard, either.
Though not as conveniently dispersed as in other neighborhoods, Park Slope’s subway stations provide access to essential subway lines that can eventually connect you to whatever train you need.
The two essential train stations you should know are Grand Army Plaza and 9th Street. Grand Army Plaza, framed by the famous Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch, is located in the northeasternmost corner of the neighborhood, providing access to the 2, 3, and 4 trains. The red 2 and 3 trains can take you to the Financial District and parts of the West Side within 30 minutes, while the green 4 line will give you access to the Upper East Side and Grand Central Terminal.
Meanwhile, the 9th Street station is almost in the heart of Park Slope and is serviced by the yellow N, R, W, and orange D trains.

Gramercy Park
Those willing and able to splurge on some of the most exclusive real estate available in NYC are bound to come across Gramercy Park. When you do come to explore it, mark it down as one of the most commuter-friendly neighborhoods in Manhattan.
Gramercy Park is an oasis within the city’s concrete jungle, which boasts one of the best locations to reach almost every corner of the Big Apple. Nearby Union Square provides access to the essential N, R, and W trains, which connect you to virtually any train. The 4, 5, and 6 trains open up the entire Upper East Side, while the L train will take you straight to Williamsburg whenever you crave hipster-approved craft coffee, cocktails, and beer.
Venture two blocks west from Irving Place, Gramercy Park’s eastern border, and you’ll arrive at the western 14th Street stations, which are serviced by the 1, 2, and 3 trains; these will be your best ticket to reach hotspots like Columbus Circle or Times Square, from where you can connect to any train you need.
