Bella Vista Neighborhood Guide
By Todd Hovanec on April 21, 2020
Once part of Moyamensing Township, Bella Vista initially found its roots with an influx of Irish immigrants settling in the 1840s. In the later decades of the 19th century, immigrants from Italy began pouring in. The institutions they established continue to define the neighborhood today, none more so than the historic South 9th Street Market, more commonly known as the "Italian Market."
The neighborhood’s current name, Bella Vista, which means "beautiful sight" in Italian, didn’t receive its name until the 1970’s once this part of the city began experiencing renewed growth after a period of decline following the early 1950's.
